Playtime
Playtime may be viewed as fun from a child's perspective, but there is so much learning and development that occurs as they play. We use a play-based approach in kindergarten which means that even more structured times such as math and literacy incorporate playful activities such as games, hands-on activities, songs, and movement. Our playtime blocks are less structured and provide students with real opportunities to play with toys and materials, and let their curiosity and background knowledge guide their play. This may take place inside or outside. We try to have one indoor playtime and one outdoor playtime each day. This class-time outdoor playtime, is in addition to the recess times. Playtime is one of my favourite times of day at school because I'm able to see children's strengths and prior knowledge come through as they play in unpredictable and amazing ways. It's so neat to watch and interact with students during this time.
